I'm an assistant professor of musicology at the University of Illinois, a half-capable sax player, erstwhile recorder player, and father of children who are just old enough to start developing their own pop culture tastes. I've written about Thelonious Monk, Jazz historiography, Tom Waits, and cultural memory in American music. My book, Monk's Music is just out from the University of California Press, and can be found on Amazon here. I'm interested in the musical equvalent of comfort food; like polenta or mashed potatoes, I appreciate unpretentious music.
